Adrianne Pieczonka wins 2010 JUNO for Puccini!

04.18.2010 – Adrianne Pieczonka wins 2010 JUNO for Puccini!

Soprano Adrianne Pieczonka has won the 2010 JUNO Award for Best Classical Album of the Year: Vocal or Choral Performance for her recording of Puccini arias on the Orfeo label.

Highly acclaimed for her ‘radiant and pure’ (LA Times), ‘mercurial and gorgeous’ (OC Register) performances of Tosca, Adrianne brings these special qualities to such celebrated Puccini arias as Oh! mio babbino caro (Gianni Schicchi), Sola, perduta, abbandonata (Manon Lescaut), Signore, ascolta! (Turandot), Un bel di vedremo (Madama Butterfly), O fior del giorno (Edgar), among many others.
The recording, released last fall, received immediately critical acclaim:

“The irrefutable power, refinement and generosity of her voice inform every phrase on this disc. It is beautiful singing.”(Globe & Mail CD of the Week)

“Pieczonka wraps her large, honeyed voice like a thick fur stole around such chestnuts as “O mio babbino caro” and “Vissi d’arte.” She is at the full blossoming of her huge talents, and everything is technically perfect.” (Toronto Star)

“The voice itself is a thing of great beauty, and her technique is reassuringly complete and polished… Pieczonka’s excellent musicianship is evident in every phrase she sings, and her direct, unfussy approach illuminates the music without unnecessary melodrama…”(Musicalcriticism.com)

“At the end of her “addio, addio mio dolce amor”, the only thing missing is a huge storm of “bravos!” as they are surely merited in this rendition.” (Das Opernglas)

In an award-winning year, the 2010 JUNO follows the recent announcement that Adrianne’s recording of Lohengrin (Hänssler Profil) with Semoyon Bychkov won the DISC OF THE YEAR and the OPERA AWARD at the 2010 BBC Music Magazine Awards.

Her first recording, featuring Wagner and Strauss arias (ORFEO) was nominated for a JUNO award and received great public and critical enthusiasm.

What’s Next:

Adrianne is currently in Florence rehearsing for her debut in the role of Die Kaiseren in Strauss’s Die Frau ohne Schatten at the Maggio Musicale, conducted by Zubin Mehta. In May she will return to Berlin to reprise the role of Tosca and to Vienna for performances of the title role in Arabella and the farewell gala to honour Ioan Holender, Intendant of the Vienna Staatsoper.

The 2010-11 season opens with another great debut for Adrianne – the role of Senta in Wagner’s Die Fliegender Holländer at the Opéra national de Paris Bastille. Additional highlights of the season feature appearances in Ariadne auf Naxos (Munich and Toronto), Der Rosenkavalier and Die Fliegender Holländer (Vienna), Otello and Tosca (Berlin).
