Praised for his creamy, bright, smooth voice, Canadian baritone Phillip Addis has established himself as a leading interpreter of opera, concert, and recital with his spell-binding, daring, yet sensitive performances throughout Canada, the United States, Europe and the Far East.

Phillip begins his 2016-2017 season as Mercutio in Minnesota Opera’s production of Gounod’s Roméo and Juliette followed by his reprisal of Lt. Audebert in Kevin Put’s Silent Night with Michigan Opera Theater.  He then returns to Toronto’s Four Seasons Centre as Papageno in the Canadian Opera Company production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute conducted by Bernard Labadie and to the Vancouver Opera as Conte Almaviva in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. In concert, Phillip will perform Orff’s masterpiece Carmina Burana with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra conducted by Peter Oundjian.

Last season, Phillip appeared as Pyramus in the Canadian Opera Company’s highly acclaimed world premiere production of Pyramus and Thisbe by Barbara Monk Feldman, as Pelléas in Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande conducted by Kent Nagano in his inaugural season as Music Director of the Hamburg Staatsoper, in the title role of Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa and in a recital for the Canadian Art Song Project with pianist Emily Hamper.

Previous seasons have seen Phillip make debuts in the title role of Britten’s Billy Budd at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa and as Figaro in Edmonton Opera’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, as Jaufré Rudel in the Festival d’Opéra de Québec’s L’Amour de loin, directed by Robert Lepage, in performances of Debussy’s unfinished opera The Fall of the House of Usher at the Paris opera, in the title role of Massenet’s rarely performed baritone version of Werther with l’Opéra de Montréal, in the stage premiere of Gerald Barry’s The Importance of Being Earnest in Nancy, in the title role of Heinrich Marschner’s Der Vampyr at le Festival de Lanaudière, and as both Schaunard and Marcello in La Boheme at the Canadian Opera Company. A champion of the music of Benjamin Britten, Phillip has also appeared as Sid in Pacific Opera Victoria’s Albert Herring, as The Ferryman in Curlew River and Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, and in concert performances of the War Requiem and The Prodigal Son.

A consummate recitalist, Phillip and pianist Emily Hamper perform a wide and varied repertoire from the baroque to new commissioned pieces to audiences worldwide.
